Sail Away on the Norwegian Getaway
Today was cruise embarkation day! I opted to sleep in this morning and relax before my journey started. I really needed to add some sleep deposits to the Bank of Me! I left the hotel at 11 for what should have been my 45 minute journey. Maybe an hour as I got a little lost trying to find the first bus connection. Since the season is winding down here (I’m on the second last sailing before the Getaway re-positions to Miami for the winter) the buses weren’t quite as frequent to the terminal. They were still supposed to come every half hour. Needless to say I waited an hour, and with a growing line of fellow cruisers it became evident that the bus may not be coming. A kind driver (one of only a few) took us to the next station where we were to catch the more regular all year round bus. Let’s just say, that was ALSO not smooth sailing. It ended with me calling the transportation company and speaking to dispatch in order for the bus to get sent to us. I was the ‘hero’ for the day. Call me transportation coordinator as my new job title, which would not be my only new title acquired today!
3 hours after departing my hotel I finally made it to the ship! It’s massive. It’s crazy. There are just so many people. But it never felt insanely crowded yet, even with the Muster Drill! Now I can totally 100% feel the movement. I found myself swaying a bit in my room after dinner (though that could have been the wine as well). And when I’m sitting on the upper decks I can tell we are moving.
All the main dining rooms were closed for lunch before I got on so I went to the buffet at 2:30pm for my first meal of the day besides a banana. Not smart, I know! It was a good assortment of food and totally hit the spot. I walked around the main decks for a bit and then we had the mandatory Muster Drill so we could learn all the emergency procedures, and no it’s not “women and children first!” By that time I needed to get ready for my early dinner reservation. I opted to skip the sail away from Copenhagen since it was raining anyway, and keep the reservation I’d made for 5:30pm.
Dinner was excellent. Pro tip. You can order a bottle of wine and they will recork it and save it for you for another night. And you can dine at ANY of the restaurants and say you’ve got a bottle on reserve and show them your little card they give you and boom, the rest of your wine appears at your table. Like magic! It’s infinitely cheaper than by the glass if you don’t have a drink package (like I do not, it was not worth the extra money for me, it cost more than my cruise itself to add it on to the fare I had gotten)! It’s about one free glass if you’re comparing it to the by the glass prices and you choose a mid-price wine. I started with smoked mozzarella ravioli and then had the beef tenderloin entree special. For dessert was a chocolate lava cake with ice cream. It was divine! I definitely decided to indulge in both an app and a dessert for my first night of the cruise. I can easily see why people say to wear your tightest pants now and leave the looser ones for the end of the cruise!
After dinner I unpacked. Cool huh? Well, for anyone who knows me this a big deal as I can’t even keep my room clean at home! Part of the appeal of me choosing to try cruising was this itinerary and the ability to only have to unpack once in 9 days! I am very much a stay in a city for a few days goes to the next, so the ability for my floating hotel to drop me off in 6 different countries and have it lug the suitcase (and me with it) around was perfect. So far day 1 I am incredibly happy I decided to do this!
I went and hung out on the 15th floor in order to get some cell service (hello Lycamobile I love you) and then get this blog post written as well. It was nice to spend a bit of time in the semi cold air. I sat outside the cafe but still where a bit of heat was going. And, this is where I acquired my second title, French Translator! A man from France came up and asked if I was on the internet using data and not wifi. He spoke next to no English and I managed to make him understand what I was trying to tell him about the phones and how he could try and connect!
Tomorrow I wake up in Germany! I can’t wait. And I promise not to bore you with dinner photos any longer, but it was night one, I’m excited!
