Bruges to Amsterdam
I had my train travel booked long before I left Canada and so I knew that I had some time in the morning to squeeze in the very last of Bruges. Of course, this meant getting down to the water level and doing a canal cruise! Canal cruises are great because it gives you a different perspective of the city and you see new things in places you’ve already been from the different vantage point! The breeze in my hair made for some great selfies as well (haha!).
There were some places I knew I hadn’t checked off the list yet, and I saved those as they required a walk, and since I knew I’d be sitting on the train for some time, I wanted to get a good stretch and wander before heading to my next destination!
When you think Belgium what do you think? Food wise? Well, for me, it’s chocolate, and I for one adore hot chocolate. And I knew of this place called The Old Chocolate House thanks to some Internet sleuthing before I left. And it did NOT disappoint! The shop itself was so quaint and filled with delicious chocolate to buy. Then you went up the equally old stairs to the cafe area of the shop where you got to choose from the most decadent list of hot chocolates. You are served warm milk, heated to the perfect chocolate melting temperature. 3 perfectly toasted marshmallows sit on top of the glass. And all of this is accompanied by a dark chocolate shell that is filled with milk chocolate chips that rival any brand (including you Toll House and Chipits) in the world. Watching the chocolate melt, and then taking that first sip of somehow not too hot and not too cold hot chocolate as devine and the perfect foodie sendoff to Bruges.
After the hot chocolate I needed to walk off the hit of sugar rush so I went along the river to Minnewater, or “Lake of Love” to take in the beautiful scenery. Legend has it the swans, and the bridge over the lake, including the lake itself hold special “love” properties and is a romantic destination for many. I enjoyed the warm sunshine and the beautiful day knowing I’d be on the train very shortly for Amsterdam.
After two trains – and getting a seat on both trains for me and my luggage (thank goodness) I was in Amsterdam. As it was already late when I arrived I did a quick walk around where I was staying and then went to bed for a very well deserved rest and getting prepared for the next day!
